Honouring Our Roots: Supporting Hormones Naturally with Essential Oils
Using plants as medicine isn’t some passing trend—it’s our oldest way of healing. Long before
modern pharmaceuticals, our ancestors looked to the earth for support. From rituals and
ceremonies to tending wounds and calming the mind, plants have always played a central role
in caring for the body and spirit.
Aromatherapy, as we know it today, is simply a continuation of that ancient wisdom. And one of
the most beautiful ways we can work with plant medicine now is to support our
hormones—those delicate, powerful messengers that influence everything from our mood and
energy to our sleep and cycle.
When our hormones are in balance, we feel grounded, vibrant, and connected to ourselves. But
when they’re out of sync, it can feel like everything is just a little off—fatigue creeps in, moods
swing, cycles shift, and stress feels heavier.
The good news? Essential oils offer a gentle and holistic way to support hormone health. As an
aromatherapist, I’ve witnessed firsthand how plant-based remedies can help the body return to
its natural rhythm. They don’t force change—they invite balance.
In this post, I’ll share some of my favourite essential oils for supporting the endocrine system,
easing menstrual discomfort, and promoting emotional well-being throughout your cycle. With
mindful use and a little intention, these natural allies can become powerful tools in your self-care
routine.
Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea)
Best for: Estrogen support, PMS, perimenopause, mood swings
Clary Sage is a standout when it comes to hormonal support. It contains natural
phytoestrogens, which help regulate estrogen levels and ease symptoms like cramping,
bloating, and mood shifts. It also has calming properties that can soothe stress—one of the
biggest disruptors of hormone balance.
Use it: Diffuse during your menstrual cycle, or blend into a carrier oil for lower belly massage.
Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)
Best for: Emotional balance, adrenal support, regulating cycles
Geranium helps balance hormones by supporting the adrenal glands and modulating cortisol
(your body’s main stress hormone). It’s particularly helpful if you experience monthly emotional
ups and downs or struggle with cycle irregularities.
Use it: Add a couple of drops to your daily moisturizer or diffuse during stressful times.
Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
Best for: Stress relief, sleep support, calming the nervous system
Lavender promotes rest and relaxation, both of which are essential for hormone balance.
Chronic stress impacts the adrenal glands and throws off reproductive hormones—lavender
helps bring the body back to a more peaceful state.
Use it: A few drops to a teaspoon of carrier oil and add to a warm bath before bed or place a
drop on your pillow at night.
Thyme (Thymus vulgaris)
Best for: Low progesterone, PMS, supporting overall endocrine health
Thyme is one of the lesser-known hormone-balancing oils but incredibly potent. Research
suggests it may support natural progesterone production, which is key for regulating your cycle
and stabilizing mood.
Use it: Always dilute well; apply to the bottoms of your feet or lower back before bed.
Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata)
Best for: Mood swings, anxiety, low libido
Ylang Ylang is deeply relaxing and emotionally balancing. It’s also known to naturally increase
libido and can support hormone balance through its calming effect on the nervous system.
Use it: Diffuse in the evening or blend into a massage oil for calming self-care rituals. It is worth
noting that if you suffer from migraines, use Ylang-ylang at a low dilution, in 30 minute intervals.
Frankincense (Boswellia carterii)
Best for: Thyroid health, reducing inflammation, supporting the pituitary gland
Frankincense is a grounding oil that supports both the thyroid and the overall endocrine system.
It also reduces inflammation and promotes a calm, balanced state of mind.
Use it: Inhale directly from the bottle for quick calm, or add 2-3 drops into a daily body oil for
overall hormone support.
Tips for Using Essential Oils for Hormonal Balance
● Always dilute before applying to the skin (typically 2-3% dilution).
● Use oils consistently over time for best results.
● Focus on daily rituals—diffusing, warm baths, or gentle abdominal massage.
● Combine with other hormone-supporting habits like sleep, whole foods, hydration,
acupuncture and stress reduction.
Nature Knows Balance
Our hormones are deeply sensitive to our inner and outer environments. Essential oils don’t
force your body to change—they support it in returning to balance naturally. Whether you're
dealing with PMS, perimenopause, low energy, or high stress, there’s a blend that can help your
body feel more in tune again.
